Next Steps for Bariatric Surgery with Insurance

Health insurance plans vary and we will contact your insurance company to determine exactly which steps are required for your coverage. Your individual experience will be unique, but in general here are the steps you can typically expect when using insurance benefits for bariatric surgery:

  • Medical History & Physical Exam: You may need an additional exam after your initial consultation.
  • Labs: Blood testing and other lab work as determined by your doctor; it may be possible to complete this with your primary care physician.
  • Nicotine Cessation: If you smoke, you will need to quit before surgery.
  • Prep Program: Some insurance plans require a specific pre-surgery program. We will provide you with this information after we complete your benefit check.
  • Nutrition and Exercise: We offer Group Nutrition Class and Group Exercise Class virtually. Your insurance may also require a consultation with a Dietitian.
  • Psychological Evaluation: This may be required by insurance.
  • Upper EGD: Patients with certain health concerns may need this outpatient procedure to examine your stomach and esophagus before surgery.
  • Start Pre-Op Diet: We will give you specific guidelines for your presurgical diet.
  • Surgery Date: Our team will make sure you have everything you need for your surgery date. We are excited to be on this life-changing journey with you!

Next Steps for Self Pay Bariatric Surgery

Patients who are not using insurance to pay for their surgery will typically have a shorter timeline since they do not need to meet the pre-surgical requirements set forth by an insurance company. Your exact steps will vary depending on your medical needs, but a typical self-pay timeline includes:

  • Labs: Blood testing and other lab work as determined by your doctor; it may be possible to complete this with your primary care physician.
  • Nicotine Cessation: If you smoke, you will need to quit before surgery.
Nutrition and Exercise: We offer Group Nutrition Class and Group Exercise Class virtually.
