Medical Director

Role

Dr. Michaelson is the medical director of Northwest Weight & Wellness Center and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Washington State University College of Medicine, Everett. He is double board certified in general surgery and obesity medicine and was among the first to be awarded the Focused Practice Designation (FPD) in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery from the American College of Surgeons. He has been exclusively focused on bariatrics since 2006.

Expertise

Dr. Michaelson received both his PhD in Neuroendocrinology, and his M.D. with Alpha Omega Alpha Honors, from the University of Illinois. He completed his general surgery training at the University of California San Diego Medical Center in 2000 and went on to complete training in minimally invasive surgery at the Texas Endosurgery Institute. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

A founder and past president of the Washington State Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Dr. Michaelson played a pivotal role in expanding access to care for people with obesity in Washington and served as an advisor to the Food and Drug Administration to expand access to care nationally. He was honorably retired from the Medical Corps of the United States Navy after 23 years of service. He has been named one of Seattle’s “Top Docs” four times and was named “Best of Western Washington’s” Best Doctor in 2008.

Patient Focus

What Dr. Michaelson finds most rewarding is the ability to see his patients lose pounds, and regain their health, and reengage in life. As patients shed weight, they also experience tremendous improvement in other conditions related to their weight—such as diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. But most importantly, they find the energy to do more and begin to truly enjoy life again.

Interests

In his free time, Dr. Michaelson enjoys cooking, gardening, and activities on the water with his family.
