The Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator can be used to calculate your BMI. Your BMI indicates how much weight you carry for your height. Use the “Metric Units” tab for the International System of Units or the “Imperial” tab for US units.
BMI has limitations. It cannot take your body composition into account, such as how much body fat, muscle mass, or bone mass you have. However it is the measurement that insurance companies us to determine whether you qualify for bariatric surgery.
Typically, people qualify for surgery if they have:
- A BMI of 35 or greater with a medical condition related to obesity, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or sleep apnea, or
- A BMI of 40 or greater with or without medical conditions related to obesity.
If you are not paying with insurance, these BMI levels may not apply to you.
